International conference on
Protestantism, Knowledge, and the World of Science:
Chapters from the History of Europe’s and Hungary’s Higher Education from the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century
First Announcement and Call for Papers
29-30 November 2012, an international conference will take place at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary, Budapest, on Protestantism, Knowledge, and the World of Science. Since the Reformation Protestant schools, colleges and universities have been instrumental in developing and furthering sciences as well as creating a unique background to interdisciplinary cooperation through their openness to new ideas and thoughts.
- Papers should present new research on the different aspects of Protestantism and scientific as well as social
development, the dissemination of ideas in the given period;
- Papers can also reflect on paradigms of ethics in contemporary scholarly discourse.
Organizer
The conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Humanities, Károli Gáspár University of the
Reformed Church in Hungary, Budapest.
Plenary speakers
Plenary speakers include Hans Erich Bödeker and Jan Peter Balkenende.
Short paper presentations
In addition to the plenary papers, the conference programme includes the possibility for a number of short presentations of research on various aspects of the interrelationship between Protestantism and the development of scientific thought. The organizers invite interested scholars to send in their proposals.
The following conditions have been set:
- papers should have a length of maximum 20 minutes;
- languages should be English or German;
- presenters should have a doctorate ;
- proposals should consist of an abstract of 1-2 pages ( max. 500 words) and a short CV
The plenary papers and a selection of the short papers will be published in a conference volume.
